Overview

The role is responsible for managing the work of the English Translation Section, ensuring the timely, efficient, and high-quality provision of English translation, revision, editing, and related language services.


Key Responsibilities
  • Set objectives and develop work plans for the English Translation Section (ETS).
  • Provide guidance and advice to ETS staff, conduct performance appraisals, and manage staff.
  • Identify and apply new computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and technology.
  • Develop professional relationships with colleagues and advise on documentation priorities.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of ETS for quality and quantity.
  • Recommend improvements for work methods, staffing, and technology.
  • Supervise administrative matters for outsourced translation.
  • Translate, revise, and edit IMO documents, particularly complex texts.
  • Coordinate document quality control and undertake complex assignments.
  • Organize and coordinate teams for meetings and conferences.
  • Keep the IMO Style Guide under review and make authoritative decisions on English terminology.
  • Advise on the preparation, drafting, and presentation of documentation in English.
  • Manage and evaluate the use of the proofreading tool PerfectIt.
  • Advise and provide training for Secretariat staff on drafting in English.
  • Work with the Terminology Specialist on English entries in UNTERM.
  • Assist with conference interpretation if required from staff translators.
  • Answer queries and provide assistance to other UN organizations, Member States, and institutions.
  • Represent IMO in inter-agency exchanges on translation and related matters.
  • Provide support to IMO Member States regarding English versions of instruments and documents.
  • Provide advice to drafting committees on English drafting, style, and terminology.
  • Provide training opportunities for junior translators and students.
  • Host interns and professionals seeking work experience.
  • Interact with other UN organizations to adopt best practices and innovation.
Required Experience
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive professional experience in translation and revision, preferably within the United Nations Common System.
  • At least 5 years as a Senior Translator/Reviser is essential.
  • Minimum 5 years in a management role responsible for performance and development of staff is essential.
  • Experience in planning, organizing, and supervising the work of translators, managing competing priorities and deadlines, and overseeing the use of contractual resources and quality assurance arrangements.
Qualifications
  • Advanced university degree (masters level) or equivalent in translation/languages.
  • A first-level university degree with four additional years of experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

• Proficiency in English to mother tongue standard. • Proficiency in French and Spanish.
Languages Preferred
• Knowledge of other official UN languages would be an asset.
Contract Duration
Fixed-term for two years (first year is probationary) with the possibility of further extension, subject to satisfactory performance.

Remuneration
US$ 103,165 net per annum, plus post adjustment (currently US$ 82,119). Salary is free of income tax in the United Kingdom.
