Overview
Serves as a lead officer in complex legal matters involving international law, providing legal advice, conducting research, and preparing legal opinions and documents. The role involves representing the organization in proceedings and advising on various legal aspects of its operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Serves as a lead officer in one or more areas of concentration, handling complex legal matters.
- Provides legal advice on diverse substantive and procedural questions.
- Performs legal research and analysis, preparing legal opinions, studies, briefs, reports, and correspondence.
- Prepares or provides input into submissions/motions in arbitral proceedings.
- Services committees, task forces, expert groups, and other bodies.
- Reviews, advises on, drafts, and negotiates contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
- Provides advice and support in resolving disputes and third-party claims.
- Advises on and participates in negotiations and settlements of claims and disputes.
- Provides advice and support on the Organization's procurement activities.
- Provides legal advice on the interpretation and application of financial and staff regulations and rules.
- Represents the organization in complex cases before arbitral and other tribunals or administrative proceedings.
- Serves on various boards, committees, working groups, and task forces.
- Coordinates and directs teams of other legal officers and mentors junior officers.
- Contributes to the review and design of legal instruments, policy, and guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Experience
- A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in the practice of law.
- Experience obtained in the legal office of an international intergovernmental organization or legal office of a Government or in a law firm.
- Experience in legal analysis, research, and drafting.
- Substantial and progressively responsible experience in claims analysis.
- Substantial and progressively responsible experience in the practice of international commercial arbitration.
- Experience in the practice of international commercial arbitration involving international intergovernmental organisations is desirable.
- Experience in the practice of law with an international intergovernmental organization is desirable.
- Experience in advising on the status and the privileges and immunities of an international intergovernmental organization is desirable.
Qualifications
- Advanced university degree in law is required.
- A first level university degree in law in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- Admission to the practice of law, or otherwise qualified to practice law, in a Member State of the United Nations is required.
