Overview

Political Affairs Officer (P-3) role supporting the Assistant Secretary-General overseeing specific regions, providing advice and ensuring implementation of senior-level decisions.


Key Responsibilities
  • Provides advice and recommendations to senior officials on key issues.
  • Communicates senior-level decisions and guidance and ensures implementation.
  • Gathers, selects and analyses information from various sources.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of political issues affecting assigned countries and mandates.
  • Provides inputs on trends and developments to senior officials and colleagues.
  • Provides technical and substantive back up for mandate implementation.
  • Maintains contacts with other UN sectors, international organizations and governments.
  • Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organizations, governments and NGOs.
  • Drafts and reviews project proposals and budgets, monitors project implementation and drafts reports.
  • Prepares meetings of senior officials with country representatives.
  • Drafts and monitors office workplans and compiles implementation reports.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Required Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience in conflict prevention, mediation, preventive diplomacy and peacekeeping is required. Experience drafting sensitive political analysis and diplomatic correspondence is required. Experience working on peace and security issues related to the Americas and to Europe and Central Asia is required. Experience for at least one year in a front office supporting UN senior officials is desirable. Experience in drafting work plans and managing projects is desirable.

Qualifications

An advanced University degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in Political Science, International Relations, International Economics, Law, Public Administration or a related field is required. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience maybe accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
