Human Rights Officer, NOC
Overview
This role involves leading human rights activities and ensuring the implementation of the UN Support Office in Haiti's mandate, focusing on research, analysis, and integration of human rights issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts substantive research and analysis of human rights issues and events and assesses their impact on the human rights situation in Haiti.
- Collects and analyzes human rights data and indicators in Haiti, including gender-specific data and indicators.
- Ensures that human rights issues, including their gender equality dimensions, are integrated into political, humanitarian, and economic efforts and programs.
- Defines work plans for the assigned area in accordance with established terms of reference.
- Supports the drafting of HRDDP risk assessments and the implementation of mitigation measures.
- Supports field verification work through periodic visits and follows up on various cases and situations.
- Represents the HRDDP Unit during working meetings.
- Supports human rights capacity-building efforts in Haiti.
- Drafts various reports, communications, briefing notes, statements, and other documents, including those intended for decision-making bodies.
- Trains and supervises newly recruited or less experienced staff members.
- Performs any other related duties as required.
Required Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area is required. A minimum of two year’s experience working in a United Nations common system field operation (inclusive of peacekeeping, political missions and UN agencies, funds, and programmes) – or similar international organisation or non-governmental organisation – in a conflict setting is required. A minimum of two years of experience representing communities or working with communities in promotion and protection of human rights is required. A minimum of two years of experience in human rights protection work, including through engaging with military and police for the protection of civilians is required.
Qualifications
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of relevant professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
