Overview
Provide technical expertise and support for the sustainable development and management of fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea region, contributing to GFCM's 2030 Strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical inputs for GFCM 2030 Strategy implementation and advice on fisheries and aquaculture.
- Monitor, analyze, and address ecological, biological, economic, market, governance, or social issues.
- Support scientific working groups and national experts, including data preparation and review of scientific outputs.
- Develop, maintain, and improve analytical tools and workflows for fisheries science and management.
- Act as a liaison between scientific experts and the data management team.
- Provide technical assistance and capacity development on analytical tools and methods.
- Coordinate projects and initiatives supporting fisheries management and capacity development.
- Support the planning and organization of relevant events and activities.
- Assess, monitor, and address environmental, economic, social, governance, and planning aspects of aquaculture.
- Support the GFCM CoC and its intersessional activities, including drafting documents on recommendation implementation and IUU fishing.
- Support research programmes, trials at sea, gear selectivity tests, and pilot studies.
- Contribute to the design, implementation, and improvement of fisheries and aquaculture information management practices.
- Support the implementation of work plans of scientific advisory bodies and formulation of scientific advice.
- Edit and revise technical and scientific documents and publications.
- Perform any other related duties as required.
Required Experience
At least one year of relevant experience in fisheries research, sustainable aquaculture, natural resource management, project development and implementation, data analysis, MCS and compliance issues or related fields. Work experience in more than one location or area of work, possibly with focus on the Mediterranean and/or Black Sea region. Demonstrated experience in one or more areas relevant to fisheries and aquaculture management, including fisheries assessment, fisheries data analysis, climate change, fisheries decarbonization, vulnerable species conservation, ecosystem-based fisheries management, compliance, monitoring, control and surveillance, or related fields. Demonstrated experience with analytical methods, data and information management processes, scientific workflows and/or technical tools relevant to the assigned area of work. Experience supporting scientific working groups, expert panels or advisory bodies. Experience in working with international and intergovernmental organizations, preferably in connection with the Mediterranean and Black Sea region.
Qualifications
Advanced University degree from an institution recognized by the international Association of Universities (IAU) UNESCO (for consultants) or technical specialization (only for PSA) in natural, marine biology or related fields, social and economic sciences including any of the following fields: biology, fisheries or natural resources management, aquaculture, fisheries or natural resources economics, fisheries technology, international law, international relations social development, marine/freshwater affairs, data science, engineering or other fields related to fisheries governance, monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) and information management in fisheries and aquaculture contexts or in other field related to the work of the Organization. Consultants with a bachelor's degree need two additional years of relevant professional experience.
