Climate Education Specialist (Home based Retainer) - Nassau, Bahamas
Overview
Provide specialized technical support to the Government of the Bahamas to integrate climate change into the national education system. The role focuses on curriculum enhancement, capacity building, stakeholder coordination, and policy support.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct initial review of national climate policies, education frameworks, and existing climate change education materials.
- Hold inception and kick-off meetings with key stakeholders.
- Develop a stakeholder map and engagement strategy.
- Develop a detailed workplan and calendar.
- Identify potential implementation risks and propose mitigation measures.
- Prepare an Inception Report.
- Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the national curriculum, teacher readiness, learning resources, and institutional capacity.
- Conduct a gap analysis.
- Prepare a needs assessment.
- Develop evidence-based recommendations.
- Provide technical support for embedding climate change education across existing curriculum areas.
- Develop a Curriculum Integration Framework.
- Develop Learning Progressions.
- Prepare Scope and Sequence Recommendations.
- Develop Teacher Implementation Guides.
- Support coordination and collaboration among relevant entities.
- Promote authentic learning opportunities.
- Facilitate access to technical expertise.
- Support resource mobilization and partnership-building efforts.
- Develop policy briefs, case studies, climate education toolkits, student and teacher resources, awareness-raising materials, infographics, and digital resources.
- Develop a Climate Education Monitoring Framework.
- Provide embedded technical advisory support to relevant units and institutions.
- Prepare monthly progress reports, quarterly technical reports, workshop and stakeholder engagement reports, lessons learned documentation, and a final consultancy report.
Required Experience
At least 5 years’ experience in public and/or private sector with a focus on education, climate change, project management, or any related field. Experience in developing, supporting, and implementing climate and education related initiatives; Knowledge of the country’s context of policy frameworks, national plans and strategies related to climate change. Desired: Experience in education, policy development and curriculum reform. Experience in curriculum development and education programme design. Demonstrated experience in designing, developing, and delivering teacher professional development programmes and capacity-building initiatives, particularly in educational or climate-related fields. Familiarity with UNFCCC processes, including COP, Subsidiary Bodies, NDCs, and national climate planning processes. Strong coordination, communication, and facilitation skills across diverse stakeholder groups. Experience in partnership development, stakeholder engagement, and resource mobilization.
Qualifications
A master’s degree preferably in public policy, education, development, climate change, natural resource management, environmental management, and any other relevant field of study. A bachelor's degree in a related discipline with an additional 2 years of relevant work experience (7 total) may be accepted instead of an advanced university degree.
