Overview

The Deputy Registrar assists the Registrar of the International Court of Justice and acts in the Registrar's absence. This role involves managing administrative, diplomatic, and judicial duties related to the Court's operations and external relations.


Key Responsibilities
  • Managing aspects of the internal administration of the Registry.
  • Supervising departments and divisions of the Registry.
  • Overseeing specific projects.
  • Managing the Court’s external relations and acting as the channel of communication.
  • Managing relations of a diplomatic nature with States, UN organs, international organizations, and the host government.
  • Managing the proceedings in cases before the Court.
  • Maintaining relations with the parties to a case.
  • Ensuring communications and notifications are issued.
  • Being present at meetings of the Court and of chambers, providing assistance, and ensuring preparation of reports or minutes.
Required Experience

A minimum of 15 years of professional experience in the practice of public international law, in international dispute resolution or in the administration of international organizations is required. Progressively responsible managerial experience, preferably in a judicial institution or an international organization, and proven supervisory abilities in a multilingual and multicultural environment are required. Experience in multilateral and/or bilateral diplomacy is highly desirable. Knowledge of the jurisprudence and procedures of the International Court of Justice is highly desirable.

Qualifications

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law or international relations, with a specialization in public international law. Studies in public administration or related areas would be an asset. A relevant combination of university degree, legal training and qualifications, and professional experience in the above-mentioned areas may be considered as equivalent.

Remuneration
The Court’s salaries are calculated in US dollars but paid in euros. They consist of a basic salary and a post adjustment which reflects the cost of living in the Netherlands and the euro/dollar exchange rate. The emoluments received from the Court are free of all taxation.
