Overview

Internship opportunity to support environmental governance and law programmes in Latin America and the Caribbean through legal research, technical support, and capacity-building initiatives.


Key Responsibilities
  • Assist countries in developing or reviewing environmental legislation.
  • Conduct legal research on international environmental and human rights law.
  • Provide legal support for the implementation of the Escazú Agreement.
  • Assist in organizing initiatives on environmental human rights defenders.
  • Support the Fifth Montevideo Programme for the Development and Periodic Review of Environmental Law.
  • Assist in developing regional model laws and other parliamentary association activities.
  • Provide technical legal support on environmental law matters.
  • Prepare written summaries and oral presentations of research.
  • Contribute to publications on environmental law.
  • Assist with the organization of training events and meetings.
  • Support the production of websites, publications, and public information activities.
Required Experience

No working experience is required. Candidates are encouraged to demonstrate relevant academic background or coursework aligned with the internship, such as academic projects, research assignments, or coursework highlighting ability to work on environmental law and governance.

Qualifications
  • Enrolled in a master's degree programme in Legal Affairs, Law, International Law, or International Environmental Law; or
  • Enrolled in the final academic year of a Bachelor's degree program in Law or in Legal Affairs; or
  • Have graduated with a university degree in Legal Affairs, Law, International Law, or International Environmental Law.

Languages Required
Fluency in oral and writing English and Spanish are required.
Languages Preferred
Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.

Remuneration
The internship is UNPAID. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
