Senior Legal Officer (S2)
Overview
The Senior Legal Officer will assist in formulating policy and priorities for the Law and Justice Section, analyze justice-sector data, and coordinate rule of law activities. The role involves developing initiatives to strengthen justice-sector institutions and engaging with relevant legal bodies.
Key Responsibilities
- Assisting in formulating the Section policy, priorities and strategic approaches on issues pertaining to rule of law
- Serving as deputy to the Chief of Section in the co-ordination of section activities and staff
- Serving as legal analyst, analysing trial-monitoring and other justice-sector data, drafting trial monitoring reports, and helping co-ordinate LJS monitoring and rule of law activities in the field
- Developing, co-ordinating and overseeing professional development initiatives, institutional dialogue and follow-up activities aimed at supporting the implementation of Mission recommendations and strengthening the capacity of justice-sector institutions
- Developing and managing targeted engagement, and maintaining close co-operation with relevant judicial and legal institutions in Kosovo
- Monitoring, analysing and reporting on priority rule of law, justice-sector and human rights developments, and providing timely advice and recommendations
- Providing legal and rule of law advice to other units within the Mission
- Co-ordinating internal and external follow-up, advocacy and institutional dialogue on LJS findings and recommendations
- Assisting with responding to internal taskings, briefing materials, programme and project development, reporting and other LJS deliverables
- Performing other duties as assigned
Required Experience
Minimum 6 years of relevant professional experience. Experience in the practice of law, e.g. judges, prosecutors, lawyers, etc. Knowledge of courtroom proceedings and criminal law and procedure. Knowledge of international legal procedure standards and instruments. Staff management experience.
Qualifications
First-level university degree in law or significant work experience in criminal justice and/or law enforcement (the latter required for police corrections officer training).
