Communications Officer-UNOCHA-(Nationals Only)
Overview
The Communications Officer supports OCHA Sudan's work through the collection, analysis, processing, and dissemination of communications products. The role involves regular contact with other humanitarian organizations to produce and disseminate various communications products.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor, analyze and regularly report on humanitarian developments or emergency situations and responses in Sudan.
- Lead and contribute to the drafting and consolidation of key humanitarian reporting products, including Flash Updates, Situation Reports, Humanitarian Updates, social media content and other internal and external information products.
- Draft daily and weekly update reports on the humanitarian situation.
- Prepare or contribute to the preparation and dissemination of various public information products, including reports, talking points, key messages, presentations, press releases, statements, human-interest stories, campaign materials and social media content.
- Produce or commission quality visual content including photos, photo galleries (with captions), infographics, social media graphics and videos.
- Work closely with communications staff from other humanitarian organizations to develop communications and advocacy strategies and produce content.
- Organize and participate in working groups, meetings, conferences, consultations with colleagues, other agencies and partners.
- Assist in the review and revision of the Humanitarian Coordinator's information products.
- Collect, analyze and compile data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods.
- Prepare draft notes to Management, Humanitarian Briefing Packages for the wider humanitarian community including donors.
- Perform any other relevant duties.
Required Experience
A minimum of 2 years (with a Master’s degree) or 4 years (with a Bachelor’s degree) of relevant progressively responsible experience in communications, journalism, humanitarian affairs, development, or other related area is required. Relevant experience in a humanitarian context (complex emergency or natural disaster) within the UN Common System or other comparable international organization is required. Experience in producing field-based content, including videos, human-interest stories and photography is required. Experience in developing and adapting content for social media platforms is desirable. Experience in coordinating with partner organizations on content production and dissemination is desirable. Experience in developing, analyzing and reviewing reports for senior management is desirable.
Qualifications
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, international affairs, social sciences, humanitarian affairs, development, information technology, information management or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
