Overview

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Specialist to map Moma and Machanga Districts in Mozambique, identifying marine uses, overlaps, and potential conflicts through detailed mapping and stakeholder engagement.


Key Responsibilities
  • Submit an inception report with a detailed work schedule and identification of spatial data gaps.
  • Document stakeholder ground-truthing of marine uses and submit a draft of marine spatial zones.
  • Submit web maps, story maps, and an interactive dashboard visualizing spatial data.
  • Submit an interactive online atlas and accompanying geospatial database.
  • Use GIS tools to develop a detailed interactive atlas with maps of Moma and Machanga districts showing physical, oceanographic, ecological, biological, health status of natural capital, and human use data.
  • Work with community leaders to undertake ground truthing for community-based initiatives, participatory marine spatial planning, and detecting variability and change.
  • Adhere to industry and community-established data standards for an online atlas.
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings for validation of maps and atlas.
Required Experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in developing and/or implementing programmes on coastal ecosystems conservation, natural resources management.
  • Experience and knowledge in the application of geographic information systems (e.g. ArcGIS), information management and in preparation and delivery of presentations.
  • Working experience with coastal communities in Mozambique is required.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary set up with government, non-government stakeholders including local communities on natural resource management matters in Mozambique is desirable.
  • Ability to travel to, and work at project site in Mozambique is desirable.
Qualifications
  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree) in Geographic Information Systems, Ecology, Environmental studies, Marine science, coastal ecosystems management, or any related discipline.
  • A first level degree with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

• Fluency in English (both written and spoken) is required.
Languages Preferred
• Knowledge of spoken and written coastal dialects of Portuguese is desirable.
