ASSISTANT MEDICAL OFFICER - Fixed Term Limited (FTL), NOA
Overview
The Assistant Medical Officer will provide clinical and medico-administrative duties within the UNHCR clinic in Kakuma, focusing on emergency medical care, disease surveillance, and health education.
Key Responsibilities
- Participates in running the UNHCR clinic for assessment, stabilization, and treatment of medical, surgical, or obstetric emergency cases.
- Assists in coordination with ministry of health teams for contact tracking and infectious disease surveillance.
- Performs day-to-day clinical duties, including attending to walk-in clinic patients.
- Assists with the coordination of medical evacuations and emergencies.
- Carries out pre-placement and periodic medical examinations, immunizations, and travel advice.
- Refers staff to and follows up with outside specialists.
- Supports health education and medical counselling to clients.
- Participates in addressing work environment and occupational health issues.
- Responds to emergencies on a 24/7 basis and is on call outside office hours.
- Undertakes house calls and hospital rounds when required.
- Liaises with other dispensaries and host nation medical facilities.
- Follows United Nations policies and procedures regarding medical clearances, sick leave, and medical evacuations.
- Recommends medical evacuation when required and is responsible for related paperwork and reporting.
- Ensures proper follow-up on all cases.
- Applies terms of reference in Administration manuals for UN clinic operations.
- Supports supervision and distribution of work for nurses and other clinic staff.
- Contributes to establishing good relations with hospitals, private medical facilities, and blood banks.
- Contributes to ensuring appropriate training programs are implemented.
- Undertakes medical clearance according to UN guidelines and procedures.
- Undertakes 'outpatient' treatment and immunization requirements.
- Participates in regular reporting on clinic activities and medical facilities.
- Supervises and manages the performance of the JMS nurse.
- Assists in collecting and analyzing data to identify trends and provide insights.
- Supports documentation of requirements and background information for data analysis.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Experience
A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in clinical medical practice in a field environment, hospital environment, pre-hospital environment or related area is required. At least two years' experience working in an Accident and Emergency unit or Intensive care unit is required. Experience in counselling and/or stress management is desirable. 1 year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable. Experience working in an occupational health setting is desirable.
Qualifications
A first-level degree (Bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery, MBChB) with two additional years of relevant work experience is required. Proficiency in computer skills, particularly in MS Office software and use of databases, is required. Full registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners' and Dentists' council with a license to practice medicine is required. Certification in occupational health and safety is desirable.
