Overview
The Chief Medical Officer provides leadership and supervision of the Medical Services Section to ensure efficient and effective medical support to all Mission components. The role involves planning and implementing medical programs and advising the Mission on medical matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Plans, organizes, manages, supervises and coordinates Medical Services Section (MSS) in the Mission by undertaking day-to-day clinical duties.
- Prepares budgets and controls finances.
- Develops the Medical Section’s work plans, monitors their implementation and evaluates the performance of staff.
- Reviews job openings, interviews and evaluates candidates.
- Procures, manages and administers contracts related to medical support.
- Follows UN established policies and procedures regarding medical pre-clearances and clearances, sick leave and medical evacuations.
- Ensures the implementation of directives from UNHQ.
- Manages the interface between medical staff and various stakeholders.
- Establishes and implements appropriate training programmes.
- Ensures the implementation of adequate Infection Control measures.
- Organizes and participates in addressing work environment and occupational health issues.
- Liaises with medical units in the Mission and host-nation facilities.
- Acts as Advisor for the Mission on medical matters.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Experience
A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible clinical experience including five (5) years of combined clinical and management experience in one of the areas of medicine is required. Experience in managing medical services in support of or in a field operation of the United Nations Common System or a comparable international organization is desirable. Experience in a Multi-Dimensional Peacekeeping mission is desirable. Experience in change management is desirable. experience in Tropical Medicine is desirable.
Qualifications
Doctorate in Medicine (MD) or equivalent in medicine is required. Currently registered to practice medicine in own country or another UN member state is required. Residency in one of the medical specialties is required. Qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of residency.
